The clock is winding down toward the deadline for this year’s RTDNF Scholarship and Fellowship program. More than a dozen grants, totaling over $30,000, are available not only for college students enrolled in journalism and communications programs, but also for young professionals who are already working in their careers.
With the costs of higher education these days, accompanied by the prospect of finishing school with more than a little debt, I’m surprised more students aren’t clamoring for the opportunity to apply! And for those young working journalists, who couldn’t use a fellowship grant to support their efforts?
These programs exist through endowments from a number of RTDNF’s good friends and supporters. They believe the future of electronic journalism is best assured through the strong training and education of those beginning their careers in our business.
Take a look at our scholarship and fellowship page. You’ll find scholarships for California students, Texas students, sports reporting students, minority students and others, as well as fellowships in areas like medical and military reporting. On that page, you’ll also meet some of our winners and hear what receiving an RTDNF scholarship means to them.
We’ve moved the entire application process online this year, making it easier to begin your application and even store what you’ve done so far and come back to finish it later. And there’s no cost for your application. It’s easy, simple and free!
A word of advice: Judges will want to see some of your work as part of the application process, so those with a few well-written and produced stories—which show their potential for a promising professional career---will have a leg up come judging time.
If you’re a student or young professional, or know someone who is, take a little time to check out these programs and apply. You could be on your way to joining the 2013-14 class of RTDNF scholars!
