By Mike Cavender, RTDNA Executive Director
RTDNA was delighted to host Paul White’s grandchildren at this year’s Paul White Award ceremony at EIJ13. David Jenkins and Suya Colorado-Caldwell joined us in Anaheim as we presented the award to Chris Wallace, host of Fox News Sunday. The award is named for Paul White, the first news director of CBS News.
This year’s award presentation of RTDNA’s highest honor was special on two fronts: Not only were David and Suya present to share in the celebration, the award to Chris marked the first time in the long history of the award that it has been presented to two generations of journalists in the same family. Chris’ father, the late Mike Wallace of “60 Minutes” was the recipient in 1991.
David and Suya only learned of the award in recent months after going through some of their parents' papers and memorabilia. They contacted RTDNA to learn more about it and we were pleased to invite them to join us in Anaheim for the presentation. Suya remarked they “felt like rock stars” after being introduced to the attendees by RTDNA Chairman Vince Duffy.
What’s more, Suya’s daughter will be attending college next year to study journalism and communications. We invited all of them to join us in Nashville in 2014, so yet another generation of the White family can learn more about and appreciate the great legacy that Paul White left us.
